VERSUZ: Brought to You by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz

When the stay-at-home order began across the country, we relied on certain technological devices to cope and stay sane. Celebrities have gone live on Instagram, calling other celebs, which have entertained a lot of home sitters. Other people have been doing calls on Zoom to stay in touch with their friends and loved ones.

Music producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz came together to host “Versuz”, which is musical artists going head to head in a match with their catalog of hits, while people look on to decide who should have the victory. The two producers kicked it off going against one another, and then more acts followed suit.

Now there were some that I was able to catch. One headliner was DJ Premiere versus RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan. That was an awesome show. I absolutely loved RZA’s background projector screen playing Afro Samurai, while showcasing hits from ODB, Method Man, and so much more. DJ Premiere did his thing, which some tracks I didn’t know he produced. That was the beauty of it, for old heads like myself, listening to some throwback jams, while many times on lookers kept saying “wait, he produced that”. I leaned more towards RZA.

Another segment was Teddy Riley versus Babyface. First go-round, Teddy was doing THE most, to which it got late and they had to reschedule. Second round went a bit smoother; however, Mister Teddy Riley was doing the most again. Besides that, so many songs they produced made me feel like I was back in the 90s all over again, remembering all those songs as a kid. It was wonderful. In my opinion, it was hard to tell who the winner was, because there was another mishap (on Teddy’s part), and the show had to end. I called it a draw.

Sunday (May 10), it was Erykah Badu versus Jill Scott, Mother’s Day edition. While everyone was wanting them to go against each other, it was a different vibe between the two of them. These ladies have crossed paths, and are good friends. Before they began, they complimented each other, asking how their kids are and their well-being. Now that’s unified sisterhood right there! The way they were going hit for hit, somebody had to burn those incense and sage because the atmosphere was everything that evening. Like Teddy and Babyface, I can’t call a winner. Because those ladies delivered. It makes me realize, they do NOT make R&B music like that anymore.

Now the next matchup is Ludacris versus Nelly. I have to side with Luda for this one, but we shall see this weekend. So, if you’re trying to find something to do at home, in spite of places beginning to slowly reopen, check your social media for a post about future VERSUZ battles for however much longer they keep this going.
