Inclusion is  A Good Thing, Yet Not Everyone is Happy about the Sesame Street Pride Tweet

– C. Imani Williams

Sesame Street connected with the LGBT community and her allies with an inclusion Tweet. Although it didn’t say, “Happy Pride” the message was clear. Twitter responded, with members sending back tweets of thanks and praise to the children’s program for teaching kids to celebrate people.

Of course there are others who see it as “political attack on the imaginations of kids,” and are sour on the idea of muppets being framed in a pride rainbow. Since everyone is entitled to an opinion this writer is chiming in.

First of all inclusion ain’t never hurt nobody. Double negative, intended. Aa a society we’re keen on double messages. Love your neighbor, but not really, we say we’ll show up and counter with a poor excuse later, and we bully relentlessly.

What of kids who learn early on that everyone is special in their own way, and that we’re different for a reason? I think kids who are taught to see the value in all people are more likely to be compassionate and loving.
