Conversations Dealing with Writing and Dylan
Characters:
Brittney: College student in third semester in Art and Craft of
Writing 2500.
Dylan: German Shepard service dog to Brittney age 15.
Setting:
Night time in Denver at the UA Denver Pavilions Stadium 15
after reading the assignment of writing a creative nonfiction
essay for the class Art and Craft of Writing 2500. Stars are
bright and a full moon are gazing down on the smallish
skyscraper.
Brittney: Why has this semester been so much harder than the
others boy? God, I miss you… I don’t have want or need to create
anything more for writing.
Some clouds start to move into a shape as Brittney gazes
into the sky.
Brittney: It’s kind of funny Dylan, it almost looks like you
taking shape in the clouds.
Dylan: Woof… Woof…
Brittney: I’m losing it… Besides I don’t want to write anymore
because of the frustration of editing. Laughs sadly. I never was
good at editing. Wind blows.
Dylan: Woof… You never had the patience for it. Woof…
Brittney: I never did have the patience for it however I did
learn this semester to tolerate it and find even more jewels in
my work because of it… That is nothing compared to what I am
great at, the ideas that flow like a rushing river with melting
ice for writing.
Dylan: Woof… That is why you created my autobiography before I
passed away. Woof…
Brittney: That was probably how I was able to create your
memorial paper before you even passed away.
The wind does an eye roll blowing Brittney’s dirty blond
hair all over the place. Brittney tries to tame her hair once
again.
Brittney: Yes, yes, I know, you probably would have nipped me
for that comment. What did you think of my poetry, “Gone but
Forgotten” and “Beautiful Strengthening Death”?
Dylan: Woof… It was something different from you which is
probably why it took you almost three days to complete it. You
can usually push your poetry, freeform mostly, out in less than
an hour. Woof…
Brittney: It was challenging and new for me to work in a
standard verse rather than freeform and it took me three days
to do. Brittney’s earthy colored eyes widen at that comment that
just left her… I know for a fact that you enjoyed “Beautiful
Strengthening Death” the most, even though you tried not to have
favorites because you loved them all.
Dylan: Woof… You did and still do know me so well. Woof…
Brittney: Now I must go out of my comfort zone again I have
to write a piece that is an essay in creative nonfiction, how
between hell and heaven, am I supposed to do that?
Dylan: Woof… I don’t know. You can add me in to the creative
nonfiction piece if you want? Woof…
A light bulb just went off in Brittney’s head as she slowly
begins to smile.
Brittney: You must be watching over me Dylan because I could’ve
sworn you just spoke to me and stated to have you be added to
the creative nonfiction piece… It’s not a bad idea though.
Dylan: Woof… Sometimes I worry about you, my girl. Woof…
Brittney: I have learned a ton of new things from this class
which has made it interesting for me.
Dylan: Woof… Like what? Woof…
Brittney: Like how to apply what happens to me and create a
wonderful poem or story out of it even though it can be hard for
the emotions and feelings it brings up.
Dylan: Woof… Like which story? Woof…
Brittney: Like “A New Life Begins with Dylan”.
Dylan: Woof… I can bet. You did forget the part however that I
helped you start to overcome your flashbacks. Woof…
Brittney: It was hard to add certain aspects and affects that
the flashbacks created along with the abuse.
Dylan: Woof… I will always protect you like how you protected me
against anyone and everyone even if I didn’t need it. Woof…
Brittney: I know you will protect me boy. I miss you so, so much
and I hope you aren’t suffering anymore my sweet boy?
Dylan: Woof… Don’t worry my precious girl, I am no longer
suffering and I miss you too, you were and are my world. Woof…
The clouds break apart and breaking the image of Dylan.
Brittney finally allowed some tears to leak out of her eyes as
she watched the clouds on by.
